In September of 2009 the city was awarded a $337,500 grant from the South Carolina Department of Commerce to rehabilitate a 2,320 foot section of pipeline in the York Street / Church Street area. The repairs were to be made using cured-in-place (CIP) technology, which allows workers to reinforce and recondition the pipeline using existing entry points. The old pipelines are made of vitrified clay. The CIP lining will eliminate cracks and joints that allowed vegetative intrusion and other infiltration. The grant that paid for the work is part of the state's Community Development Block Grant Progam and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
