Archives to Offer Weekend Hours

February 22, 2010

The Camden Archives and Museum will be open on weekends during the months of March, April and May, City Manager Kevin Bronson announced today. The weekend hours will be Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and the first and third Sundays of each month from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

“We feel like there is a demand out there, especially from out-of-town researchers, for us to have some weekend hours,” said Howard Branham, the Archives Director. “Hopefully being open on weekends will allow more people to visit and see what we have to offer.”

The Archives and Museum is recognized throughout the region as having one of the best genealogical research libraries in the Southeast. It houses a diverse collection of books, maps, microfilm, files, periodicals and general reference materials which aid visitors in their research for ancestry. It also houses rare files and artifacts from the Camden area.

“These three months will help us decide if we should make the weekend hours permanent,” said City Manager Kevin Bronson. “The Archives is such a valuable asset to the City that we want to see it used to its full potential.”

The change in hours was prompted by a steady stream of visitors from other states, many of whom said that weekend hours would allow them to visit more often.

“Camden is so fortunate to have such a thorough, respected facility,” said Mayor Jeffrey Graham. “Our rich history is chronicled in the Archives. We want to share it with as many people as we can.”

The Camden Archives and Museum is located at 1314 Broad Street. The telephone number is (803) 425-6050.
